Do You “SEE” Things?

“What I do remember is visualization of the sound of music, seeing bodies in movement in relation to how music sounded, because my mother practiced at the keyboard a lot and I also went to her lessons. As a two year old, three year old I remember seeing things in movement.” – Twyla Tharp, American Dancer, Choreographer and Author

Recently I came across Twyla Tharp and I got interested in her. Her words are penetrating and challenging.

Let’s look at some of the things she said in respect to LEANING FORWARD.

1. VIZUALISATION

“What I do remember is visualization of the sound of music, seeing bodies in movement in relation to how music sounded,…”

Really to LEAN FORWARD you must SEE what to LEAN FORWARD to. In other words, YOU MUST “SEE” a “VISUAL” to move to.

The question really is,

•WHAT CAN YOU SEE REGARDING YOUR FUTURE?

•WHAT IS THAT PICTURE/IMAGE within you that is compelling you to move forward towards it?

There is no future without a picture. The picture is the attraction force.

People become what they visualise often.

People ACT what they see.

If you can’t see it, you can’t act it.

For you to successfully LEAN FORWARD, you will have to see that which you need to act, for you to move forward.

So, how do you do this?

A. Get the images of who you want to become and those things you want to get. I mean people and things that represent the future you want to enter.

That’s why some people have what is called VISION BOARD. This has worked for so many people. Those things they stick up on the board are pointers to their future. Those things MAY look like they are out-of-reach now, but the more they see them, the more THEY BECOME THEM.

B. Go to places that represent your future. You can’t keep playing in a pond and expect to master the sea. Where you are determines what grows inside of you.

EXPOSE yourself to the environment that will grow the seed of greatness in you. If you know that you want to become a radio presenter (AOP) why don’t you find ways to get into radio studios even if it means that you will become a sweeper in a radio studio. Another way to get in is to become an intern or a volunteer. Look for ways that will get you into the environment that is important/vital to your LEANING FORWARD.

C. Keep VISUALISING! Mentally, always see yourself doing what you really like to do. See yourself living in the future you desire to live in. It is said that creation is DUAL in nature: first, MENTAL before the second creation which is PHYSICAL.

The MENTAL CREATION gives birth to PHYSICAL CREATION. In other words before you can see it happen in your life, you must first IMAGINE IT (SEE IT MENTALLY).

2. TAKE LESSONS

“…because my mother practiced at the keyboard a lot and I also went to her lessons.”

You shouldn’t be told this, but I will have to say it here as a reminder. A monk is a monk because he took lessons. A teacher is a teacher because he took lessons. A lawyer is a lawyer because he took lessons.

LESSON as a NOUN is defined as A PERIOD OF LEARNING OR TEACHING.

You cannot learn if you are not taught.

Wikipedia defines LESSON as “structured period of time where learning is intended to occur. It involves one or more students (also called pupils or learners in some circumstances) being taught by a teacher or instructor.”

For examples, “We offer music lessons, guitar lessons, dance lessons, piano lessons, swimming lessons and more!”

Merriam-Webstar says that LESSON is “an activity that you do in order to learn something”.

To LEAN FORWARD you will have to TAKE LESSONS from instructors or teachers or whosoever can teach you things regarding your area of intended growth whether book authoring, speaking public, cooking, social media mastery, etc.

How do you go about this?

A. Register in formal institutions. There are established formal institutions where you can register for training in your of calling. Or you will have to ask about or research them. That’s your responsibility.

For instance ORANGE ACADEMY in Lagos teaches Integrated Brand Experience, digital marketing and similar courses.

AAA School of Advertising in South Africa is a top rated advertising school where you can take lessons on advertising, copywriting and advertising related courses.
B. Others taught. Away from formal institutions, there are various thought leaders in different fields who can mentor you or you get registered for their trainings as they come.

You don’t really need to look to far to see them. They visibly voice out what they are passionate about on social media platforms.

Thought leaders like Leke Alder, Niyi Adesanya, John Obidi, Emeka Nobis, etc.

Some of them have various courses they teach. Another way around this is to attend their various seminars and trainings as they come up. You can’t be short of them.
C. Self taught. Trully, whatever information you need now are just some few keypad-buttons away, or touch-screen away from you. Have you ever heard these words, “ASK GOOGLE!” That’s the password to getting whatever information you need on the world-wide-web.

Regarding your area of intended growth, you will have to do deliberate search for topics related to your niche and consume them. Thought leaders have articles online that are accessible to all.

Check out Seth Godin, Greg Hickman, Pat Flynn, John Lee Dumas, etc

Again, there are books that you can pay for online and offline in your area of intended growth.

What else? Podcasts. Youtube videos. Newsletters. Free and paid online courses.

3. LOOK BACK TO YOUR PAST and CONNECT THE DOTS

“As a two year old, three year old I remember seeing things in movement.”

This is the last thought on this.

Can you take steps back into your past and see that little you dreaming of the future? Can you do that?

If what you dreamed of then was what was deeply imprinted in your subconscious, it will somehow emerge in your future.

IMPRINTS from the past in those impressionable ages often times lead us on into the future we desire.

Some of us look back and connect the dots. Some can’t really connect the dots. But those who do, see how their past dreams paved the way into their future.

Notwithstanding, majority deviated from the past due to different reasons, but I those IMPRINTED upon came back to that.

Some other folks got their IMPRINT much later in life as they came in contact with the world away from their homes or right in their homes through the media or people who left residues of career inclination in them.

Whatever, there is a point at which the IMPRINT was left. You need to go back and find it.

How you do is basically through REFLECTION. knihT kcab. That’s not an erro. That’s is THINK BACK there with the words turned backwards.

If you can connect the dots, fine. But if you cannot, well go on with your life.

But really, DO YOU “SEE THINGS that propel you forward?

Do these things you “see” make you LEAN FORWARD?

If they do, share with us.

Your friend,

Sam Semako.
